Reducing Returns through Post Adoption Support

Laurie Lawless hosted a live discussion about post-adoption support programs in animal shelters, sharing data that showed approximately equal numbers of cats and dogs entering shelters, with about 50% of dogs being euthanized. She outlined four approaches to post-adoption support: having dedicated internal staff, partnering with local trainers, utilizing remote support services like GoodPUP and Pets Academy, and implementing the Petzel app system which provides automated behavioral guidance to adopters. Laurie emphasized the importance of clear communication about trainer capabilities and proper documentation of post-adoption support outcomes, while also cautioning shelters to carefully vet any external training organizations they partner with to ensure they use science-based, humane training methods.
